Senior & Reserve Football:

Carndonagh Seniors were back in action on Sunday last after a 2 week break and while they made a winning return to action, many signs of ring rustiness were apparent in their performance and the game leaves them with lots to work in the coming weeks.

Playing into a strong wind blowing down the pitch, Carndonagh worked the ball well when attacking in the first half found it hard to get shots off under pressure and into the wind, with some efforts tailing off wide and others dropping short as a numerous opportunities were created but very capitalised on – the pick of the bunch a well worked goal finished by Darragh McLaughlin after some neat interplay involving Cathal O’Kane, Garvan McGrenra among others – the ball was moved at pace through the Convoy defence and Darragh arrived on the end of the move to finish with aplomb into the top corner. The halftime score was 2-03 to 0-01 in favour of Carndonagh.

A few breaks from deep early on by Convoy showed the 2nd half would not be a formality but a run of points from the 10th to the 20th minute of the half eased Carndonagh clear and confirmed the win – however there were many examples of players shooting under pressure or taking the wrong option at crucial times which meant not as many scores were gotten as possibly could and this is something that needs to improve ahead of Junior ‘A’ Championship this weekend. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the 2 week break but its clear a lot of work is need to get back to the level of performance required and expected.

Final score – Carndonagh 2-09 Convoy 0-03

Carndonagh reserves were also in action on Sunday and in the first half of their Junior ‘B’ championship game versus St Eunan’s showed some of signs of rustiness similar to the seniors, unfortunately as they were playing into a strong breeze, every mistake, every time they conceded possession was punished decisively by a very mobile and accurate St Eunan’s forward line. On the rare occasions Carndonagh got into the St Eunan’s half they showed that they posed a threat and could score but unfortunately the mortal sin of kicking the ball away against the breeze told on the scoreboard at half time as St Eunan’s led by 7 pts – 1-02 to 0-10.

The second half performance was a marked improvement but crucially the failure to take a number of the good goal chances created in 10 minutes just after halftime proved costly as just as Carndonagh got back to within a point Eunan’s broke and scored 3 pts in quick succession and it was this ability to snipe up field and claim a score which kept St Eunan’s out of reach as Carndonagh piled on the pressure in the closing minutes but unfortunately they could not snatch the lead and Eunan’s claimed the result they needed to advance to the next round of the championship. Final score – Carndonagh 2-12 St Eunan’s 0-19

A disappointing result for all involved but lads can consider themselves to be unlucky but must now refocus on the league games remaining as they have an excellent opportunity to retain their hard won league title from last year.
