Final Score: Carndonagh 2-05 Malin 1-09
In a tight game in which was played in terrible conditions - strong wind and driving rain - Carndonagh and Malin still managed to serve up and entertaining and keenly contested Inishowen Minor Final.
Carndonagh played into the wind in the first half, having to work the ball into the Malin '21 before they could attempt to take on any scoring opportunities - while at the same time they had to tackle hard to push the Malin forwards into shooting from outside their own '45. This they did from start to finish in the first half and only the concession of some soft frees allowed Malin to register their scores - some of these frees being very harshly awarded. At the other end, Carndonagh also had to rely on frees for their scores but also passed up
good shooting chances with 4 wides and 3 shots dropping into the keeper's hands in that half. Halftime score 0-03 to 0-05 in favour of Malin.
Halftime brought welcome respite from the elements for both teams, however the second half resumed with the same ferocity of tackling and levels of effort as had been shown in the first half. Malin's first score of the half coming from another harshly awarded free as Conor Doherty dived full length to catch the ball, he was pushed to the ground and not allowed to get up but was then adjudged to have over carried the ball. This put 3 points between the teams as Malin started to get their running game going, things looked even worse when a '45 dropped short and into the net after a mix up on the goal line. However, this goal spurred Carndonagh to life and they
proceeded to score 2-02 to open up a 2 point lead of their own.
At this stage the momentum seemed to be with Carndonagh as they started to win kickouts and breaking ball all over the field and 3 good scoring opportunities were created but not taken and this allowed Malin back into the game, Malin then went on to score 3 points without reply to win by the minimum. Final score Carndonagh 2-05 Malin 1-09. The effort and workrate of the Carndonagh lads could not be faulted but a few simple mistakes in both halves cost us dearly, all we can do now is up our efforts as we prepare for the County final.
