Intermediate Reserve Championship Final: v Buncrana, in McCumhaill Park, Ballybofey
- Carndonagh 1-05 Buncrana 0-09
Carndonagh was narrowly defeated in the reserve intermediate championship final on Sunday in Ballybofey by Buncrana. Final Score Carn 1-5 Buncrana 0-9. The Carn team was defeated by the accuracy of the free taking of Barry McFadden, the lack of discipline of some of the Carn players in giving away silly frees inside the fifty yard line and the lack of penetration in the forward line. Buncrana began the game the stronger of the teams scoring three points without reply from Carn. Daniel McLaughlin opened the scoreline for Carn in the fifteenth minute after great work by J. J. Doherty and Dominic Doherty. This was closely followed by a point by John Gibbons. Buncrana replied with a point by Barry McFadden and Gary Mac Laughlin scored a point for Carn on the stroke of half time from a free leaving the score at half time Carn 0-03 Buncrana 0-04.
Carn made some positional changes at half time. James Carr was moved to full forward with John Gibbons going to midfield and J. J. Doherty going to corner forward. Barry McFadden scored an excellent point from a free before Dominic Doherty scored a fine point from play. The positional changes made at halftime were not working for Carn and Buncrana added three points from the accurate boot of Mac Fadden leaving the scoreline Carn 0-4
Buncrana 0-8. Carn introduced three substitutions Simpson, Owen Doherty and Fergal Matthews. The game transformed. Carn played with more urgency and intent and came back to draw the game through Gary McLaughlin scoring a point and a goal from a well taken penalty. However the indiscipline of the Carn team reappeared. Barry McFadden slotted over another brilliant free. Des Newton narrowly missed an opportunity to level the match in the last kick of the game and may have been better advised to move the ball forward and hope for a free or a better scoring opportunity.
Such is the advantage of hindsight. Emmet Doherty had an outstanding game at corner back.
Newton and Justin Doherty were steady. Daniel McLaughlin tried hard but gave away too many frees. Fergal Doherty played well at midfield as did James Carr in the first half. The only forward who did justice to himself and played to his potential was Gary McLaughlin. The three subs of Simpson Matthews and Doherty certainly revitalized the team when introduced. Possibly changes should have been made earlier in the game. This is only one of many thoughts which the obviously disappointed management team of Declan McLaughlin and Philip Mooney have to reflect on. However well done to everybody in reaching the final. The team lined out as follows:
Paddy McCallion, Emmet Doherty, Des Newton, Mark Canny, Seamus Callaghan, Justin Doherty, Daniel McLaughlin(0-01), Fergal Doherty, James Carr, Dominic Doherty(0-01), Francis Ward, Michael Nelson, Gary McLaughlin(1-02), J.J. Doherty, John Gibbons(0-01).
Subs: Jerry Simpson, Owen Doherty, Feargal Matthews (who we hope makes a
speedy recovery from his broken wrist - thanks for the Teddy Bear stickers
Feargal!), Joe McLaughlin, Kevin McElhinney, Kieran Canny, Diarmuid Gallagher, Brian
McLaughlin, Ryan Davenport and Paul Lafferty.
