Carndonagh 3-08 Downings 0-11
All County Division Two U16 Championship Final -

Carn won the All County Division 2 Championship on Sunday 27th July in McCumhaill Park. Carn led from start to finish and once they were in the lead never let up in their pursuit of victory, this was the last game of the Under 16 season for these players and their performance reflected this as they made one final effort to win a County title after being so cruelly denied in the League Final. The final score was 3-08 to 0-11, and as remarked at the end the goals were the difference, the goals illustrated the sharpness in the Carndonagh attack and also the strength of their defending as Downings never looked like scoring the goals they needed to get back into the game. The Carn attack also showed an economy of use of the ball while Downings were forced to work harder for their scores.

After this performance it is impossible to single any players out as this match showed what the Under 16's season has been about, team work, effort and support for each other - as well as an ability to play some fantastic football.

Match report by Vincent Lynn:
Carn U/16 team had a fine victory over Downings in the div 2 championship final. This was a match which Carn dominated from beginning to end. Kieran Canny and Cormac Skinnader had their team well motivated and in an excellent state of mind for this game. The spiritual side of things was not forgotten about either. Cormac and Bernie together with their good friends David and Anne Gallagher climbed Croagh Padraig earlier in the day praying for the desired result.

Captain Dominic Doherty had an excellent game at full forward and led his team by example. Dermot Doherty in goals made many fine interceptions and his kick outs were always well delivered. The full back line of Hartin, Canny and McGeoghean was as solid as a rock with particularly Canny impressive. The Downings forward line despite valiant efforts could not penetrate this defence for a goal. O Kane, Devlin and Nelson in the half back line played absolute brilliant football. Nelson contributed four points, three from frees, to the Carn scoreboard and made many fine piercing runs from the half back line. The Simpson brothers dominated midfield in the first half and played a more tactical containment game in the second half- no doubt the plan of coach Canny.

The six forwards Coyne, McLaughlin, O'Donnell, Kilfeather, Doherty and McLaughlin played as a well-oiled unit. The passing movements, the soloing of the ball the running off the ball was of the highest calibre amongst all the forwards. Young Christy McLaughlin scored two of the finest goals ever scored at McCumhaill Park and had hard luck for a third. Joe Mc Laughlin scored a goal he will remember for the rest of his life. He made a fine catch in the middle of the field, soloed the ball thirty metres at full speed and volleyed the ball to the corner of the net from twenty-five metres. Declan O'Donnell scored two fine points and certainly played his heart out for the entire game. Ryan Davenport was introduced as a substitute in the second half and can be very happy with his contribution.
