 Carndonagh 3-11 Naomh Mhuire 2-08
This game was played in glorious sunshine in Carndonagh between 2 teams who had made losing starts to their respective league campaigns. Naomh Mhuire started much the livelier and attacked in droves from the off, taking advantage of sloppiness in the Carndonagh defence to score 3 unanswered points, Carn's reply came initially in the form of a wide from Barry Browne but 2 minutes later, Mickey McLaughlin(M) roaming forward from right halfback scored Carn's opening point. This was quickly followed by a goal from Gary McLaughlin, which was scored after some fine play from the Carn forwards. Gerard Doherty(K) won a kickout and fed the ball to Niall McLaughlin(JB) who drilled a pass in low to Cathal Doherty(K) who had pulled away from the edge of the small square to the left corner, he fed the ball to Barry Browne who ran infield and fed the ball to Gary and he rolled the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal past the keeper. Naomh Mhuire replied with a free on the 21 after some clumsy tackling by the Carn defenders. Carn soon scored another goal, this time a fine piece of individual play by Cathal Doherty(K), who received the ball on the 21 on the left touchline; he surged forward and along the endline before drilling the ball into the top of the net. As Naomh Mhuire tried to reply, Carn broke upfield the move culminating in Cathal Doherty(K) rattling the crossbar with a thunderous shot. Moments later Carn suffered the misfortune of having Barry Browne leave the field, he went over on his ankle in the corner trying to gain possession, and he was replaced by Donnacha Gallagher. Soon Mickey McLaughlin went on another great run from the halfback line and he rifled a shot to the back of the net to the surprise of the Naomh Mhuire keeper - the keeper gets the benefit of the doubt as strong sunshine was in his eyes. The game reached the last 5 minutes of the half with the score at 3-01 to 0-04 in favour of Carn. Naomh Mhuire still had time to get a goal back as mix up in the Carn goal allowed the ball to be thumped into the net by a Naomh Mhuire forward after a free to leave the score at halftime, 3-01 to 1-04. Carn started the second half slowly and the ball was given away badly at midfield, and Gerard Crossan made a great save as Naomh Mhuire went for goal. The rebound was hoisted back into the square and was fisted home by a Naomh Mhuire forward with more than a hint of square ball, this score made the scores all-square. Donnacha Gallagher put Carn back in the lead with a fine point, which was quickly cancelled out. Carn then stepped up a gear with 5 unanswered points from Darren Burke, Oliver McConalogue, Gerard Doherty(K), Niall McLaughlin(JB) and Donnacha Gallagher. Darren Burke's free and Niall's point in particular were impressive scores and lifted the whole Carn team. Naomh Mhuire came back with 2 point of their own to reduce the deficit to 3 points. At this stage with about 15 minutes left Carn were forced into another change with Keith Doherty replacing Cathal Doherty(K). Carn then scored 3 unanswered points from Donnacha Gallagher who was set up by Keith, Oliver McConalogue and Darren Burke. Naomh Mhuire then finished up their scoring with a free. After this Naomh Mhuire put some pressure on the Carn backs getting a free, from which they attempted for goal but dragged the shot wide. The final score of the game came from Darren Burke to leave the final score Carndonagh 3-11 Naomh Mhuire 2-08. Carn's man of the match was undoubtedly Kevin Doherty(T). Tiny's fielding in the second half was magnificent an provided the base for Carn to attack, score and in effect win the match. While around everyone else played well and contributed to this victory.
